NEW WORKS FESTIVAL

This July, Renegade will open its doors wide to writers, directors, actors and designers and unite them under one goal: the creation and development of new work.

THE FESTIVAL:

WEDNESDAY, JULY 8TH @ 7PM
WRITE FIGHT
PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH REVOLVER LITERARY MAGAZINE

8 writers enter – only one can win. Watch area authors, bloggers, journalists and playwrights compete in a single elimination tournament live on stage. We give dueling writers typewriters, a prompt, 10 minutesto write, and plenty of hilarious distraction (provided by members of the Renegade Improv team). After the 10 minutes are up, the writers read what they’ve written, and the audience favorite moves on.

Scheduled fighters include: Mayor Don Ness, Lucie Amundsen, Abraham Curran, Mary Fox, Claire Kirch, Christa Lawler, Lawrence Lee and Megan Rekowski.

THURSDAY, JULY 9TH @ 7PM
MODERN PROPHET by Sam Graber of Minneapolis

Against the backdrop of the oil fracking boom, an energy scavenger and his sister arrive at the river headwaters just east of Jordan, Minnesota. They soon learn they are not alone. A strange man roams the woods at night. He claims he carries the power of God. Modern Prophet explores the nature of belief and steps into the crossroads where God’s will ends and human divinity begins.

FRIDAY, JULY 10TH @ 7PM - A NIGHT OF SHORTS (featuring)

A PAPER FOREST by Claudia Haas of White Bear Lake

Gary is sent to help Lucy plant a forest. But the forest is planted and Lucy needs art – fast-food art – to keep the deer from eating her forest. This could be the last forest planted in Minnesota because the forest really wants to move into Canada. A tale of climate change and clinging to hope.

THE VIBE by Robert Lee of Duluth

One perfect couple in perfect love on a perfect night share a perfect meal. All Peter and Jillian want to do is bask in each other. But something is coming for them, something sinister and perverse. A horrible absurdity that is infecting society and coming to infect them! And next it is coming for YOU! And once it penetrates you there is no going back! Whatever you do don't catch The Vibe, it will make you feel... FABULOUS!

A GUIDE TO TEXTUAL ENCOUNTERS by Megan Rekowski of Duluth
One man tries to help another uncover the complex mysteries and undeniably difficult intricacies of a task that every man must face at one point in his life: texting back a date. Garrett, who's kind of a dick, assists Scott, a fairly naive guy, navigate the complexities of culture, sex appeal, and grammar because apparently Scott knows nothing about love.

SATURDAY, JULY 11TH @ 7PM
Finnegan’s Wake by Donald Arneson of Prior Lake
On the morning following a typical Irish wake, Nora Finnegan is keeping a vigil beside the casket of her beloved husband, Charlie Finnegan. Priest and family friend, Father Keogh, arrives for comfort and prayers. Responding to a question about Charlie’s suffering while he lay dying, Nora admits to having been so disappointed with God for allowing the suffering to drag on that she decided the Almighty needed a helping hand. The priest is horrified as Nora details how she laid a pillow on Charlie’s face, left the sickroom for tea, and returned to find him mercifully in the arms of the Lord. Gradually the truth is revealed to the others: son Billy, seeing an opportunity for gain, wants to report his mother; daughter Eileen accuses her wastrel brother of ulterior motives; Cyrus, the undertaker, worries about a delay in the funeral, and local policeman, O’Leary, is skeptical of any report coming from Billy. The characters become witnesses, judge, and jury to resolve the issue.
