EASTLAND: A NEW MUSICAL
Written by Andrew White
Music by Andre Pluess and Ben Sussman
Directed by Peter Froehlingsdorf
2nd Professional Production in History
Moored on the Chicago River one sunny summer morning in 1915, the Eastland begins boarding. Thousands of Western Electric employees and their families climb the ramp, excited for their annual company outing. Overflowing with passengers about to depart, the boat leans to port – and doesn’t lean back. Within minutes, cries fill the air, families are torn apart and unexpected heroes emerge to rescue as many as they can from a watery end. By the end of the day, a city will forever be changed and hundreds will perish in the most tragic manmade disaster on American soil in history. A title it will hold until September 11, 2001.
This haunting and epic new musical debuted in 2012 at the Lookingglass Theater in Chicago. Renegade is proud to present the second production in history of this bold and brave new work that tells the tale of an unsung and largely forgotten tragedy. With a powerful and stirring Americana score filled with folk, blues and ragtime, Eastland not only tells the stories of those lives that were lost, it examines the role that wealth, power and influence – and the lack thereof – plays in a tragedy of unimaginable size and scope.
Everything else fades away, all of our losses and all of our gains. And only the river remains...
